PINELLAS COUNTY SCHOOLS – FLORIDA

According to the Physicians’ Committee for Responsible Medicine, Pinellas County is the top-rated school board of 2007. The school received 94 points out of a possible 100 based on three criteria: obesity and chronic disease prevention, health promotion and nutrition adequacy, and nutritional initiatives. Points were awarded for the daily availability of vegan options, vegetable sides, free juice, and available soymilk.

However, it was not just healthy food options that garnered the award for the school. Pinellas County encourages nutritional education through a program called “Teen Cuisine.” Older students pair up with local chefs to create healthy recipes that are displayed in cooking shows for younger children. In addition, nutritional education specialists provided lessons on the benefits of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains for half of all elementary students.
